Radio taught me this!

Some habits that were with you in your early years seem to be the best for you, they give you a good feeling about yourself! One of such habits that I had in my teenage was to listen to the radio. Whenever I was at home, I used to turn on the radio. It was always a musical moment either I was getting ready for school or relaxing after school. And it was the sweetest thing to fall asleep while listening to the melodious songs at night!

But why am I writing all these when the post should be about crisis in life and how it helps you become the best?

This is because, today morning when I was listening to the FM (yes, no radio now!!), I had this sudden nostalgic feeling. I remembered my early days when I used to listen to radio (only Vividh Bharti and All India Radio were the saviors those days!) I suddenly started comparing the radio of yester-years with the FM of today.

I remembered, how there was a fix time for every type of songs that time. In the morning you got to listen devotional songs followed by news and an announcement of the time table of that day's programs, then came the programs of songs that included film music, non film music, some musical stories etc. And how before every song was played, the radio announcer (and not the glamorous RJs!) would tell the listeners the name of the film or the music album, singer, composer, and lyricist. And then, there were the special weekly programs like Binaca (later Cibaca) geet mala that mesmerized us with the magical voice of Amin Sayani! How good I felt thinking about all these, can't be explained in words!

And yes, let me tell you, this was all happening in the late 80s and the early 90s.

In my chain of thoughts, there came this sad moment when I lamented for not listening to the radio in the late 90s and early years of this century! Why on earth did that happen?

My trail of thoughts gave several reasons- May be, I got busy preparing for my career, may be the struggles of my life took me away from music, or may be, radio itself did not remain so attractive!

Yes, all of these had a part to play. But I never discarded watching TV in all these years? (Let me clarify, I don't watch that much TV but yes I am not a stranger to it too!)

With the advent of Televison, I thought, radio lost it's position of prime!

Not all people now depended solely on radio for entertainment. Picture with voice attracted them more now instead of only voice!

It was a period of crisis for radio. Just like it was a period of crisis for Cinema (thanks to yet another invention called VCR and the pirated videos as well as TV- after all, these three were needed to watch movies at home rather than in cinema halls!)

But then, all of them are still there. Radio has become FM. Cinema hall has become Multiplex. VCR has given way to DVD players. TV, of course, has remained TV, just that now you get those slim and trim LEDs and LCDs in place of the giant boxes!

Wait a minute! Didn't TV also change? Earlier it was only Doordarshan and some variants of DD. Now you can't even count the total numbers of channels available. How can you? You don't even see them all. In fact, human capacity doesn't allow to watch all these channels even if you try to do so!

TV, too has gone through a phase of crisis. When it made the cinema halls close down, Bollywood took the crisis as a challenge and changed its approach. The movie industry made the already bigger-than-life-cinema, even bigger! They gave you Multiplexes with an experience that can only be had in those luxurious buildings where they showed their spectacular movies with all types of facilities right at your comfortable seat!

These multiplexes brought a phase of crisis for TV. You see, what goes around, comes back to you! But TV industry was adamant. It introduced a host of other experiences- some live, some reality shows, some extraordinarily entertaining shows and yet others close to our lives (I never spelt serials!)

Now both TV and Cinema are surviving. In fact, they are surviving in the best possible ways. They have also become interdependent. They have understood, this is the only way to survive. They are giving the best of them. And we, as audience, are getting the best of both the worlds!

Stop! where did radio go? We were actually discussing it only, weren't we!

Not to say, Radio in its new avatar as FM has again made itself a part of our lives.

Pushed back by TV and Cinema, radio also gathered all its courage in the time of its crisis. It understood, people want excitement, they want engagement, they want connection and yes they also want music but not in that boring style of yesterday.

Thus, now we have Radio Jockeys (a lucrative career option for many who just love to talk!)
We have fans of these RJs who tune into their favorite FM channels at specific times. You can find people listening to FM while driving down their daily office route. You can see young and old wearing their headphones while traveling in the buses, trains and metros, thanks to the mobile companies who never forget to include FM in there cellphones! After all, it is the question of the survival of cell phone companies too!

And as a welcome change, FM is just not entertaining us like the old days' radio, it is touching our lives. The Radio Jockeys are actually engaging people socially. These RJs have partly assumed a role of media too. They question politicians, they communicate with the heroes in every field, they connect people with each other, and not to forget, they also play music, sometimes (or most of the times) on the demand of their audience!

Yes, crisis does bring in the best of us! Cinema has proved this. TV has proved this. And yes, Radio, no, FM has also proved this!

It's time for me to have some musical treat now!
Neeta was sitting alone and sipping her cup of tea beside the window, early in the morning, when this thought crossed her mind.

"What if I had been such a free person in my 30s?" "what would have I done with this much of time?"

She wondered, how her life has changed in just a decade! Just a few years ago, she did not have enough time to breathe in this hour of the day.

She could see 'the younger her' in front of her eyes! She was working with 'four' hands in the kitchen, packing the lunch box for Rajiv with all the healthy foods, the salads, the steamed veggies and the healthy snacks! After all, he was told to lower his cholesterol and sugar. And the next moment, her hands were flipping the sandwich filled with the favorite cheesy veggies. This would go into her dear son Chintu's lunch box. He loved it! And just then the toaster popped up the bread slices, she had to butter it for Chintu's breakfast. The tea and the milk over the flame were also there in her mind! The mixed smell of tea, milk, butter and cheese, all filled into her nostrils and she woke up from her 'lively' dream about her past.

"And now, see, I have so much of time, sipping this tea and doing nothing!"

Those were so busy days, cooking for husband and son was so satisfying. And then doing their each and every work, keeping the house up-to-date every time and then waiting for them to come back from their respective 'second homes'! She never though about herself!

With this thought, Neeta rose from beside the window and walked to the mirror in her room. She stood in front of the full mirror and looked at her. She has changed. The slightly plump body, the white and black peppery hair, and the matching wrinkles on the face made her look like the elder sister of younger Neeta.

How that Neeta wanted to change the world! She wanted to start a school where children will learn not the regular stuff. They would learn to think on their own, they would learn to fly! And she would fly with her dreamy children! This was her dream, her ambition!

But where was her dream now? Where was the school? Where were the children flying on their ambitions? And where was she?

Why did she not follow her dream? Suddenly she became unrestful. She hurriedly moved away from in front of the mirror and sat on the bed.

She did not have any complaint from life. Her husband is at the peak of his career. Her son is away in the foreign land, studying in one of the best universities. And where is she?

She is in the same house, with her forgotten dream, with an aging body, and a lots of time in her hands!

What is she? She is an adorable wife. She is a loving mother. She is a capable homemaker. And she is ...she is...!!!

She could not think of any other role that she could have introduced to herself! This made her feel sick. She hurriedly got up and turned on the TV. She started surfing the channels and settled with her favorite music channel.

Within a few minutes, she was not thinking about her forgotten dream, nor about what she is! She was happily watching the TV and humming the soulful lyrics. In some time, she will get up, and do her regular household chore. She will never regret about not following her dream. She will not think about the children who might have learned to fly with her, in her dream school. She will never know how she could have changed the world! She would never know what she has not given to the world! She would never realize what the world has lost! Never!

I am in a thinking mode these days. You wonder why! Because new year is approaching and everyone's so excited. I wonder what happens on the other side of new year parties and new year resolutions! Today, I was just thinking, what can change my life for better, in the new year, after all these celebrations end and everyone once again go to their everyday mode.

And this is what I came up with- habits can change my life!

And what habits can change my life?

Not sure but the following habits might change my life!

Visualizing!

I have been reading a lots of books related to law of attraction these days (yes! I don't just think, I read too!) Each of these books say, visualize what you want to be and there you are! What you visualized yourself to be, you become that. So, I started visualizing a few days back (again after childhood!) I remember how I used to visualize the things I would do after reaching home from school! So, I started my childhood routine again. It's too early to say if this works in adulthood too but I think, this has brought some positive changes in my life. How? I have started organizing my day effectively because I visualize myself in so many roles when I go to bed the night before that it becomes a tough task the next day if I don't organize myself.

I visualize myself doing each and every detailed work I want to do and bring my visualization to a positive end!

A 'To Do' list has become my habit everyday. Because, working on so many details have to be listed otherwise I just get lost in the jungle of my visualized thoughts!

Learning something new!

I have thought, I will learn a new thing every month, if not everyday! It can be as easy a thing as how to make a new recipe from a different land. And it can be as tough as how to create a mobile app!

Learning a new recipe, say from Japan, will introduce me to a subtle color of their culture. I will learn something about their cooking style, ingredients etc. I will, therefore, be aware of many other things that are so relevant for cooking yet never thought of by my countrymen! It will widen the horizon of my knowledge. Of course, I won't go to Japan to learn a recipe. The world is so small these days, I can learn their recipes with a click! Thanks to this great invention called Internet!

On the other hand, when I learn as difficult a task as creating a mobile app, it will make me think myself as a more competent person in the context of present day. After all, our life today has become dependent on Apps. Sometimes I think, the saying should now be changed from 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away!' to 'An app a day keeps the problems away!'

Jokes apart, this task of making an app might not be a difficult thing for coders who make a new app everyday. But for people like me, it's difficult! It uses a different part of my brain and thus refreshes me as a new person! Of course, learning new things can change my life.

Being thankful also changes my life!

I take so many things and so many people for granted. What's the loss if I feel thankful for everyone who make my life so easy!

I don't have to go to the fields and grow grains and veggies, I don't even have to go collect them from fields! I should be grateful to farmers and grocers.

I don't have to feel inferior among people, thanks to my parents who gave me the opportunity to educate myself!

I don't have to think about how I'll pay my bills, thanks to my job! I can always hate my job (though I don't) for not allowing me enough time to spend as per my terms, for not giving me satisfaction, but at the end, it makes my every due payment possible. There are other ways to tackle with my job problems. I can change my job, I can find purpose in my job but being ungrateful is no solution.

So, I have decided, I will be grateful to each and every aspect of my life and find out the positives in them.

Some of the other habits that I think will change my life include,

building great relationships

helping others

meditating

exercising

reading everyday

What do you think? What habits can change your life?

At a time when Indian
politics is witnessing a sea change in none other than its Capital
State City, is it the right time to discuss the role of Indian youth
and that too its voting behaviour? After all, the Chief Electoral
Officer has credited Delhi's 4 lakh, 18-19 year old voters, for the
impressive jump in voting for Delhi Election 2013! If you don't
believe it, read it here, Delhi
election 2013: Young guns fired up this poll, chief electoral officer
says

And now consider this-
50%
of Delhiites aged 18-19 have not enrolled to vote!
About half of those aged 18 or 19 in Delhi had not enrolled
themselves to vote as per this news published on 18th November 2013.
It means that these voters could not vote on 4th December, about
after a fortnight. And then on December 5, 2013, the youth of Delhi
is credited with the making of history! They brought the newest, only
one and a half years old political party in the front-line of
Delhi's politics! Why then we need to discuss youth's role in
voting for elections when they have shown this 'hard-to-believe'
magic? Because, had the other 50% of this youth voted in the
election, Delhi would have got its preferred government in no time
and without any political drama! And
this government would have been a strong one that could have brought
the changes our youth (and the old too) wants.

Just
imagine, if only 50% of young voters can dictate the political future
of our capital state what will happen when all of the country's youth
come and vote for India in the General Elections for Lok Sabha due in
2014!

Enough
Proof for Digital Vote Appeal!

Whether
it is in the USA where Obama spent millions of dollars to woo the
young voters online or at the home front where old as well as new
parties are taking to the online medium to impress and inspire their
voters, digital revolution cannot be ignored in the General Elections
of India of 2014. Twitter, Facebook, Google hangouts, You tube videos
have and are doing wonders but what's more potential now are the
mobile apps, the social apps! Because it is here where the youth is-
on their Mobile phones!

Now
it is Mobile Social Apps!

Social networking sites like Facebook are making way for social mobile Apps like WeChat!
They are the new ways to connect the youth, even for inspiring them
to vote for India! This new 'instant noodles' and 'instant messaging
generation' is less patient and thank god because we really need a
fast change in our political social system too! This generation reads
little and writes more (sms and chats!), So, they cannot be inspired
through books and write-ups. They need to be inspired by what they
like- online networking! Yes! They need to be mobilized by friends'
actions! What their friends do, they do! So, if the 50% of those
young voters who are enrolled to vote and have actually voted (the
enlightened voters) can influence the rest of the 50% (the ignorant
voters who have not yet enrolled or voted), can't we get all of them
to vote for India in the next general Elections of 2014! Of course we
can. Both- the enlightened voters and ignorant voters- are there at
one place- on WeChat and WhatsApp! So, how do we do it? Of course
through Apps!

What
Types of Apps can Mobilize Young Voters?

There
have to be many of them and they have to be useful and interesting
enough to catch the attention of our youth. Some of the suggestions
below can be taken heed of by the socially responsible App companies!

Voter
Registration App

Given
the image of the various government offices, our youth finds it a
detractor to go to the Electoral office and submit the form to get
enrolled for voting. Some Apps can be introduced to make this
procedure hassle-free. For example, there can be an App, say, 'Be a
Proud Indian Voter' App. This app can have fields where the person
can fill in his personal, residence, constituency details etc. and
get a pre filled application form directly in his or her mailbox. A
print out can be then taken out and after signing, it can be
submitted, with the required documents, in the Electoral registration
office.

But
what's social here? This app can have a list of contacts (and of
course a search option) who may help the users in filling up their
details. For instance, a person might know his district but may not
know the assembly or parliamentary constituency from where he is
eligible to vote from. Thus, either he can search the exact
constituency through whatever knowledge he has with him or connect
with his friends and/or experts who might help him getting the right
information. If an NGO or some other support group is engaged and
they might organize voter registration camps, the users can go to
such drives on the fixed dates and submit their pre filled
registration forms. There is already an app developed for this
purpose for NRI Indians staying at America, the 'Vote
for a Better India' app. If an app can be
developed for overseas Indians to get registered and come to India
for voting during General Elections 2014, why can't one be there for
inspiring our youth right at home! Well there's one already- Voter
Registration India. It just needs a variation
with an advanced feature making it a little social!

PS-
What more can we get! I was in the middle of writing this article and
here comes the news of Google's tie up with the Election Commission
of India for Voters' registration. Google
dips into CSR budget, ties up with Election Commission for voters’
registration.
So, for the next six months, Google has offered the EC its resources,
including its search engine, so that the voters can check their
enrollment status online and locate their polling station, complete
with directions by Google Maps. Anyone can type his name/EPIC
(Elector's Photo Identity Card) number and address on the Google Search
engine to generate results matching the voters' name with his
assembly/Lok Sabha constituency as well as pinpointing the location
of his polling station. Google Maps will give exact directions to the
voter on how to get to the correct polling station on the polling
day. This feature can greatly help any app developed for voters'
registration or mobilization!

Voting
Day Holiday Planning App

Section
135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 says that all the
people are entitled to get a paid holiday on the day of voting for
Lok Sabha or assembly polls. This include people
employed in any business, trade, industrial undertaking or any other
establishment including shops and even daily wage or casual workers.
But sadly, many people avail of this holiday not for voting but for
travelling or discharging some work or just resting at home, youth
included! So, can we have a social app that lets people plan for the
day of voting? Why not! When travel companies can have their holiday
planning apps, why can't we a have an app called “Cool Voting Day
Holiday Planner” App!

We
can hope for such an App that allows people do additional planning
about how to spend their voting day before or after voting. For
example, after searching for their polling booth location with the
help of the app (remember Google's tie up with EC!), they can locate
for the other interesting places on the way to the polling booth or
surrounding the booth. They can then plan their voting day
accordingly- they may want to pick up their friends/ relatives on the
way to the booth and cast vote together, locate a restaurant on the
route and have a family lunch on the way back home from the booth,
may go to a picnic spot after casting vote early in the morning or
book a movie ticket in a nearby multiplex to watch the latest release
after casting their vote!

When
they share their plans with their friends through the app, they might
get mixed responses about how good or bad their plan is. They can
compare their plans with their friends who can engage in interesting
discussions and so on. There may be socially responsible innovations
too like someone may want to volunteer at the polling booth to help
the senior citizens, disabled people and so on. Some NGOs ferry aged
to booths and back. App may have list of such NGO or people can
themselves offer aged in the neighbourhood to ferry to and fro! The
App can have points or badges or emoticons or any other such things
that can be used by the friends to show support or opposition to
anyone's voting holiday plans! This may motivate those to go caste
their votes who do not include going to polling booth in their plan
for the holiday on voting date!

Political
Gaming App

Who
can deny the importance of gaming apps! Not me. Not you, not the App
developing companies, and not even the political parties! Need a
proof? See this for yourself- Android
goes political with Modi Run, Aap Run and Angry Indians apps.
When gaming apps can benefit the political parties, why can't they
inspire the youth to vote! While the already available political
gaming apps are developed solely for political gains in the
elections, those meant for youth mobilization needs to be more
neutral and positive in effect.

There
can be games depicting the journey of two or more friends right from
becoming eligible to vote, registering their names in the voting list
to the forming of government and the outcomes thereafter! This may
include factual information, manifesto, ideologies of different
political parties (voters are information hungry too!) People playing
the game may select the party candidate they believe in based upon
the information provided but they could do so only when they are
registered as a voter (in the game too!). They can then help their
chosen party/candidate to overcome the obstacles in the run for power
by appealing for votes and collecting votes from their friends by
sharing and inviting them to play the game. With the immense
popularity and usage of high end smart phones and iPads by today's
youth, a group game that can be played by multiple users is not
impossible to be made. Such socio political gaming app can in fact,
go a long way to inspire the youth to vote for India. What more, if
such a game is linked with the actual results of the election (after
the results are declared), then they may actually create immense
interest in the youth to test their virtual voting with the actual
voting result. For example, after the results are declared, the
gaming app may give a comparison of the player's virtual score (his
own votes and collected votes) with that of the actual win or loss of
his choice of party/candidate. I am not technically sound and thus
don't know whether it is possible or not but with the kind of
advancement in the technology and the technical miracles happening

What a day was it yesterday and what a news to watch! At 7 PM, I came to know that voting is still on for Delhi elections. But why, what happened? And then realized it - AAP log jaag gaye hain! You woke up! Whom should India thank?

Election Commission- It allowed you to vote even after the 5 PM deadline! Long live the spirit of democracy!

The Government- It frustrated you with all the scams and corruption! It was high time you show them they can't fool you any more! Just other day, someone on social media called them 'Scam-gress'!

The Opposition- They have convinced you that what can be done in one state can be copied in whole nation! So what if within themselves, they remain 'Bhartiya Jhagda Party'! Again the term is borrowed from the same social media source.

AAP- After all its your party- Aam Aadmi's Party! It has shown you some too good dreams- too sweet to believe- but then if you won't dream, how would anything become reality!

Aap (You)- May be you have realized that whatever power is with you is the power of voting. May be you have believed in someone's seemingly impossible dream of eliminating corruption with a simple 'jhadu'. May be you are even ready to forget all injustice done to humanity just for the sake of development, of jobs, of cheap onions and potatoes! May be you want to teach a lesson to all those who have failed your decisions to bring them in power in the past.

I don't know what has led you to exercise your most important weapon of democracy. Is it Anna, AAP or Any other mystery? I really don't know. Do you know what's it?

Relevance of Rakhi!

Today is Raksha Bandhan! Well for half of India, it is, thanks to the confusion about the date of Rakhi this year. But what I was thinking is more about the concept and feelings underlying this festival. Is date so important a factor? If a pandit says that so and so time on a day is not good for tying Rakhi and if a sister ignoring this 'verdict,' ties Rakhi to his brother's wrist, will it make any difference to the feelings they share? If they share a caring relationship, will they start hating each other? Or if they can't stand each other but tie Rakhi in an auspicious hour, will they start liking each other?

Is Rakhi still meant to symbolize protection of sister?

As far as I know, Raksha bandhan got its name because the one who ties the Rakhi is not able to defend herself and thus the stronger sibling (read brother) is supposed to protect her from all evils. Rakhi thus binds the brother with this 'bandhan' (bond) of doing 'Raksha' (protection) of his sister. However, do the sisters still need to be dependent upon their brothers for protection? Seeing the statistics of crime in our state, I am prompted to say yes! But immediately this other question surfaces within my mind- are brothers themselves safe or are they strong enough to take on the world to protect her sister? Sometimes even more serious question comes up- are brothers sensitive enough to understand sisters?

Souring relationships and relevance of Rakhi!

Gone are the days when brothers and sisters were ready to sacrifice their lives for each other. I am just talking in general terms. There might be some brother sister couples who still live and die for each other! However, everyday news from around us that tell us the stories of cheating related to property and money, about crimes committed among family members, about brothers and sisters not visiting each other in times of need and valuing their relationship only in terms of the value of gifts and money force me to judge the relevance of this pious thread called Rakhi! It seems that Raksha Bandhan has only become a day of festivities, of good food and sweets, of new clothes and valuable gifts! It seems to have lost all its importance regarding that sacred feeling that ties the hearts of a brother and sister!

Sometimes when I get tangled into trivial issues regarding work life, I often think what are the most important factors that makes you a successful professional, rather a successful manager!

There are certain things that a manager has to achieve

Targets or results

A motivated team

Performance

However, it's not in that exact order. He might have been give a target that can be a number of sales leads, revenue or just an intangible results. This is his end goal. For achieving the target, he needs performance for which again he needs to have a team which is efficient and performance oriented. And efficiency comes only with motivation. So, what is then, the foundation of any successful managerial attempt?

How the Team Gets Motivated?

According to Motivation-Hygiene theory of Herzberg- the famous administrative thinker- there are two sets of factors affecting the job attitude of employees- one set leads to satisfaction and the other set of factors leads to dissatisfaction. They are popularly known as Satisfiers and Dissatisfiers

An organization can work to improve upon the factors that lead to dissatisfaction. For example, it can make good company policy and maintain better work conditions, pay reasonable salary and on time and the like. However, just removing the factors for dissatisfaction can not bring in the feeling of satisfaction. This can only be brought on by the 'Satisfiers' or the factors for satisfaction that can be called psychological factors. As such, managers have this great work of analyzing the aspirations, capabilities etc. of their team members so that they are able to make them move towards job satisfaction. When there is job satisfaction, some of the factors that lead to dissatisfaction too get neutralized. For example, low salary or delayed salary is sometimes overlooked by an employee if he gets recognition, growth and sense of achievement form his job.

How do Trivial Matters Play a Big Role in Employee Dissatisfaction?

Based on the above factors, suppose an employee is considerably satisfied with the challenging work he is doing at office and feels the recognition and sense of achievement. Now if this employee is very productive and giving his best for the work, will it be right to irritate him on trivial matters? For example, if the employee is creative, hard working and is taking full interest in his work but he comes half an hour later than what is the initiating time of the office. However, once he is in office, he is fully immersed in discharging his responsibilities. Will it be right to make this issue such a big issue that the employee stops feeling the sense of achievement from his work? Now one argument can be that he works well even after coming late but this sets a bad example for other team members who also start coming late and do not even deliver as much as he does.

So, what's the solution? There can be many.

Talk to the employee directly in a friendly manner and seek solution from him only. It's better if the manager talks to this team member directly without involving any intermediaries.

The manager can try to know what is making him come late and then provide solution for the same.

If there is really a problem that's making the employee behave in such a way and if the issue pertains to something bigger, the management should surely work upon this otherwise in course of time, they might lose a productive employee.

If there are more than one such employee, the office time can be made flexible. Many companies today work with flexible work hours and they are doing great with employees putting in their best.

Any other suggestion?

India is a Republic - its a known fact. The President of India is the nominal head of the State- this is also a known fact. It is an established fact too that the President of India is mere a rubber stamp. However, one of our past Presidents have shown us that rubber stamps too can influence the government policies! I am talking about the very efficient and probably the most favorite President of India- Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

Dr Kalam did what no other Presidents in the past did. He showed that even if a President cannot dictate the Parliament, he can at least register his disagreement to the policy proposals. It is a different matter that he then has to sign it (or not sign by keeping it in his office itself) after it is again referred to him. But why I am writing all this? Because, I am afraid- as a citizen of India- will the present President of India, who has transformed himself from the 'so much active politics' to a completely 'apolitical avatar' be able to keep the Highest position free of politics?

The ruling party- struggling most of the time with its coalition parties- is not able to pass the policies and laws of its choice (thanks to didis in east and south and bhaiyas in north). Can the President who is now a President due to this party only deny signing ordinances, bye laws and even orders of Presidential rules in states? Won't the Rashtrapati Bhavan become the backdoor for passing all those laws that can't be passed in the democratic temple of Parliament? Hope, this doesn't happen!

Many Indians are not happy that the President cannot speak Hindi well. With all due respect to our national language, I would also like to say that our favourite Dr Kalam was also not from a Hindi speaking state but this factor never came to anyone's mind. Does the Indians not able to recognize their real fear - the fear of being in the hands of 'Potential Political President'! Probably yes that's why they are debating about language known or unknown to the President forgetting the larger issue. Or may be, they know in their hearts of heart that 'We the Indians' cannot choose our President!

With all my fears in my mind, I pray that the Highest position of this largest democracy influence the first citizen of India magically and he be the very apolitical and a people's President! Amen!

- “We the People of India” is not just a phrase with which begins our Constitution!
- A 74 year 'young' man can be the source of inspiration to more than half of India!
- This nation can actually be awakened!
- Opposition can be quite in the Parliament and let the voice of people heard!
- Media can do without commercial breaks for longer periods to let people see and hear what their dear leaders say.

- News channel can actually take stand without being neutral and I would become a fan of Arnab Goswami for conducting the discussions in favor of 'aam aadmi'!
- Youth of this country can come out of pubs, discos and malls to street for an actual cause.
- They can make a disciplined queue at Ramlila ground to fill up the volunteers' form.
-They can distribute packets of biscuits and water to the supporting mass and EVEN pick up the used wrappers and wastes!
- An NGO can declare- they don't want further donations as they now have enough money to take forward the crusade against corruption.
- We still can think and act if a true leader shows us the right direction.
- Mobs can remain disciplined and peaceful too!
- General public can take vows for not offering bribe for whatsoever work!
- Slogans are not just slogans! Vande Mataram and Inquilab Zindabad can move that something within you which had been burried there!

And I hope that Anna stays what he is now in the hearts of millions of Indians and keeps on doing what Prasoon Joshi has beautifully said in his poem- “Lo Mashaalon ko jalaa dalaa kisiney. Bholey thay bhaaley banaa daala kisiney!”

The other day, I read in the newspapers about the polls in Delhi. Around 500 people opted for availing Section 49 (O) - Right to not to vote. The news also told that this was an incomplete figure. There are more constituencies whose data has to be revealed. The election officers expected the figure to go up to 1000!

Does that mean that we have a real dearth of visionary politicians? The Young India is losing hope in political parties as well as the candidates! There was this young man featuring in the news who claimed that he went blank after seeing the list of candidates on the voter machine. He could not decide as to who deserves his vote! He chose not to vote for anyone by entering his choice in the earmarked register. And a young lady, working for an NGO quoted that she too wanted to exercise her right of not to vote but the officers on election duty convinced her to cast her vote. Is that right? If an adult person wants to show her faithlessness in the system, do the government machinery has the right to not honoring her wish in the largest democracy of the world?

One of my colleagues disclosed to me that she too wanted to “not vote for anyone” but because it will make a huge issue in the presence of the whole of her neighborhood, she did not dare to ask for the procedure of availing Section 49 (O) and did cast her vote.

The only reason for my getting bothered is about the future of India. When there is no party strong enough to convince the people of this country about their eligibility for running government, can we feel secured? When there is no political leader, who, independent of his party, can instill faith in the youth about their future, can we remain positive about our so called democracy?

Speaking of myself, when I ultimately thought of casting vote, I wanted to know the agenda of the candidates contesting election from my constituency. To my surprise, when I searched for the same on net and otherwise- I found nothing of the sort! How and on what basis could I then vote? Has the time arrived when the campaigning methodology of our country's election too should change? Are we entitled to know about the agenda of our representatives? Is there any mechanism to ensure that the elected candidates stick to their agenda? Is that possible sometime, someday?

Lots of unanswered questions!!!

It’s not very long when the whole country was shaken up by one incident- Nithari killings. Nithari- the small so called village in Noida came to the limelight and became famous overnight- all for wrong purposes. All the news channels and the newspapers had only one topic to discuss, only one topic to write about- NITHARI and the brutal murder of its children.

What happened then? A long enquiry still going on against the accused, some compensation declared for the families of the deceased (Whether they got it or not, that is another matter to see into), gradual withdrawal of the media, affected families coming to terms and busy giving blood samples for DNA test to prove that the body parts are of their own kids, the fading memory of the people, the anger and frustration receding from our face, mind and even soul.

The souls of all those children who have been murdered may rest in peace. They have had there share of misery and their destiny took them away from their families. But what about the other children who still have their life to live on? They are panic stricken, they miss their siblings and friends but they do not worry about their future because they do not know one has to. But we do. Yes, we know and understand that our children should get education for a bright future; we work hard to provide a better future to them. We are very busy in ensuring that they get a good life but just take some time to think about these less privileged children, the children of our society- aren’t they our responsibility too? Don’t we get anything from our society that makes us liable to give back something to it? At least our society gives us our identity- We, the Indians! Our India deserves a good future- good future for all its children.

“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” - Edward Everett Hale

Some people with the same spirit have gathered together and doing what they can do, in their own little ways, to make the lives of the children of Nithari a better one. In a small room, they are running a school to give basic education to these children. They give some time in the evening, after their work is over, and teach these children. They arrange for books for these children. They are in contact with the schools in vicinity to get these children into formal education. They also try to help their families in solving their problems.
“When it comes to getting things done, we need fewer architects and more bricklayers” -Colleen C. Barrett
We need more “bricklayers”. We need people to join this initiative and help change the future of our children forever. We need You to help in this task in whatever ways you can.
Fascinated by the latest gizmos? Hold on! Before investing in any latest electrical appliance, just check how much power is it going to swallow? If you are going shopping with your child for a playstation , just go through the report of a global study which says that game consoles like Play Station 3 consumes five times more power than a medium sized refrigerator. Such a Play Station, even on its standby mode, could cost almost $250 (about Rs. 11,000) a year in electricity as compared to a fridge which costs less than $50 (about Rs 2,000) a year.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has made energy efficiency rates mandatory for refrigerators, tube lights, geysers and is planning to add air- conditioners to this list. This has been done to encourage the industry to come up with more energy efficient products. Now it’s the turn of the consumers to become responsible and switch to electrical appliances with BEE Star- Rated Labels.

Star ratings determine how many kilo-watts of power an appliance consumes in a year. A product labeled one star will consume 20 % more energy than a two star product. With every rise in the number of stars, energy efficiency improves by 20 %. Thus an appliance with One Star is least energy efficient and that with Five Stars is most energy efficient.

So next time when you are buying any appliance, count the stars within the coloured strip of the BEE label and feel honoured for being a responsible member of the mankind helping reduce global warming, an enlightened citizen increasing the availability of electricity for more people and a happy money saver reducing your own electricity bill.

Here are some more tips on energy saving

Lighting

• Turn off lights when not required
• Try to use automatic devices such as infrared sensors, motion sensors, automatic timers, dimmers and solar cells wherever applicable to switch on/ off lighting circuits.
• As far as possible use task lighting which focuses light wherever it is needed, for example- reading lamp.
• Clean up tube lights and lamps regularly. The dirt on them can absorb 50% of the light.
• Replace the ordinary bulbs with the more efficient types. Fluorescent tube lights and Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are 5 times more efficient than ordinary bulbs (incandescent lamps). They save up to 70% of electricity for the same lighting levels and last up to eight times longer.
• Don’t use curtains during daytime. Sunlight is brighter than light bulbs and it’s free too.
• Use bulbs with lower wattage.
• Use fewer bulbs in multi bulb fixtures such as chandeliers.
• Use photocells (an automatic technology) for your outdoor lights. They turn on when it gets dark out and shut themselves off at dawn.

Electronic Appliances

• Don’t keep your appliances such as TV, air conditioner, microwave oven, music system, computers, VCRs, CD and DVD players and other home electronics on stand by mode. In the average home, 40 per cent of all electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. Consider unplugging your electronics or turning off the power bar when you are not using them. In fact some of the brands are trying to introduce a new circuit board which will ensure that when a consumer shuts the TV, it does not go into the stand by mode.
• A plasma TV that’s the same size as your older T.V. can use twice the energy. And the bigger your T.V., the more power it uses

Air Conditioners

• As far as possible use ceiling or table fans to keep off summer heat. A ceiling fan costs about 30 paise an hour when in use as compared to an Air Conditioner which costs Rs.10 per hour.
• Shade your home’s windows and walls – this can reduce air conditioning energy by about 40%. Plant trees and shrubs to keep off the heat but do not block the airflow.
• Save 3 to 5 % of energy for each degree by setting your room air conditioner above 22 degree Celsius. The ideal temperature for getting most comfort at the least cost is 25 degree Celsius.
• Running ceiling or table fan allows the room to cool with the air movement as a result of which you can set the air conditioner at a higher degree.
• A good air conditioner cools the room in about 30 minutes, so use a timer and leave the unit off for sometime.
• Keep regulators at "low cool" position.
• Keep doors and windows or any other opening of the air conditioned rooms closed.
• Clean the air conditioner filters every month. It allows the unit to cool down quickly and use less energy.
• Don't place lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner run longer than necessary.

Refrigerators

• Do not open the door of the refrigerators frequently or leave it open for longer than necessary, as cold air escapes. Think before opening the door what all you need to take out from the fridge and bring all the containers to be placed in it near the fridge at the same time.
• Don’t keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold. Set its thermostat in medium cooling position.
• A full fridge is O K but do not overload the refrigerator. Let the cool air circulate within the unit.
• Cover liquids and foods stored in the refrigerator. Uncovered foods release moisture and make the compressor work harder.
• Let food get cool before placing it in the fridge or freezer.
• Keep your refrigerator away from all the sources of heat including direct sunlight, radiators, oven, cooking range etc.
• Refrigerator’s rubber door seals should be clean and tight. When it’s dark, place a lit flashlight inside the refrigerator and close the door. If light around the door is seen, replace the seals. Do the same when the door cannot hold a slip of paper tightly.
• Allow enough space around the refrigerator for continuous airflow otherwise the heat generated by the motor and compressors will not allow the unit’s cooling system to work properly which in turn will lead to use of more energy.
• Clean the refrigerator’s condenser coils regularly so that air can circulate freely otherwise the motor will work hard and use more electricity.
• Defrost freezer compartment regularly for a manual defrost refrigerator as the accumulated ice reduces its cooling power.

Washing Machine

• Power shortage is mostly experienced during the peak hours of 10 am to 8 pm. So shift consumption away from this time and avoid adding to the power demand during this peak time. By simply using some of our common electrical appliances before and after this time will do the help. Use your washing machine before 10 AM or after 8 PM.
• Always run washing machine only with full load.
• Set the shortest cycle time for washing.
• Use optimal quantity of water and correct amount of detergent.
• Use timer facility to save energy.
• Wash your clothes with cold water. About 85 – 90 per cent of the energy used by washing machines comes from heating the water. Use hot water only when it can’t be avoided and just do not be too liberal when deciding its necessity.
• Always use cold water in the rinse cycle.
• Prefer natural drying over electric dryers.

Computers

• Turn off your computer when not in use. Screen savers only save computer screens, not energy.
• If the computer must be left on, turn off the monitor which alone uses more than half the system’s energy. Whenever affordable, switch to LCD monitors which use 66% less electricity than the older CRT type. The smaller your computer monitor is, the less electricity it will use.
• Use sleep mode of computers, monitors, copiers etc. when not in use, to save approximately 40% of energy.
• Pull out the battery chargers like those for laptops, cell phones and digital cameras after use as they draw power when plugged in and are not at all energy efficient.
• Use a power strip. Plug peripherals (like printers, audio systems, monitors) into a power strip or UPS. Then turn it off when you want all of your equipments to turn off.
• Use a smart power strip. Some new types of power strips use a motion sensor to decide if you're still at your computer. If not, they shut down power to certain sockets (such as ones for peripherals) after a user-designated time has elapsed. Other power strips shut off several sockets, based on whether you've powered down a device plugged into the "control" socket.
• Consider using a laptop when you have one. Laptops use up to 90 per cent less power than a desktop computer.

Microwave Ovens

• Microwave ovens save energy by reducing cooking time. 50% of energy can be saved by using Microwave ovens instead of regular ovens, especially for small quantities of food.
• Do not bake large food items.
• Don’t preheat unless unavoidable. Unless you're baking breads or pastries, you may not even need to preheat.
• Don't open the oven door too often to check food condition as each opening leads to a temperature drop of 14°C (25°F).

Smaller Electric Appliances

• Avoid dry grinding in your food processors (mixers and grinders) as it takes longer time than liquid grinding.
• Turn off electric stoves several minutes before the specified cooking time.
• Use flat-bottomed pans that make full contact with the cooking coil.

Electric Kettle

• Use electric kettle to heat water as it is more efficient as compared to electric cook top element.
• When buying electric kettle, choose the one with an automatic shut off feature and a heat resistant handle.
• A dirty kettle uses more energy to heat up. Clean them regularly with boiled water and vinegar so as to remove the mineral deposits.
• Don’t overfill the kettle for just one drink. Heat only the required amount of water.

Electric iron

• When shopping for an electric iron select iron boxes with automatic temperature cutoff.
• For different types of clothes, keep the position of the regulator according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer
• Do not iron wet clothes and do not use more water on clothes while ironing.

Fans

• Use electronic regulators instead of conventional regulators for ceiling fans.
• Exhaust fans should be installed at a higher elevation than ceiling fans.

Geyser

• Use before 10 AM.
• Switch off when not required.
• 18% of energy can be saved by setting water heater at 50 Degree Celsius instead of 60 Degree Celsius.
• Use Solar Water Heater - a good replacement for an electric one.

The Art of Active Listening

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.” — Ralph Nichols

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Have you ever felt like not being properly heard by your spouse, your colleagues, your children, your friends? In the midst of that serious discussion with your husband, haven’t you said to yourself “God! Why isn’t he listening to me?” When you had a cold war with your mother-in-law, haven’t you realized that she didn’t listen to the narration given by you for not bringing her medicine and is just going by what her “morning walk friends’ have told her? And just remember that meeting where you went with the first ever presentation of yours, bubbling with energy. After a few minutes of the presentation, haven’t you felt like you had wasted your time preparing for that presentation and here was the ‘intellectual crowd’ making most of their time munching cookies and enjoying the cool atmosphere of the conference hall.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">
Yes, we all crave for ears to listen to our words.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">These were the situations where you were the speaker. Just think of those moments when you were on the other end, listening to someone- in class, at home, in a training session, in a discussion, in meeting. Were you not behaving like the listeners in the above paragraph?
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">"We were given two ears but only one mouth, because listening is twice as hard as talking." Did you know that our brain uses as much energy in an hour of careful listening as is used by our body during a long race?

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Listening is one of the most important skills one can have. How well we listen has a major impact on our job effectiveness and on the quality of our relationships with others. Active, effective listening is a habit which can be developed through practice. It is the foundation of effective communication. It is a way of listening and responding to other person that improves mutual understanding.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">What is ‘Active Listening’
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Active listening is an intent to "listen for meaning", in which the listener checks with the speaker to see that a statement has been correctly heard and understood. The goal of active listening is to improve mutual understanding.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">In Active listening, the attention is focused on the speaker. The listener must be able to repeat in his own words what was being said by the speaker. It is not necessary for the listener to agree or disagree with the speaker. He has to hear, interpret and assign a contextual meaning to what has been said. He then has to restate his interpretation of the spoken material so that the speaker may confirm or clarify the actual meaning of what was said by him. This enables the speaker to find out whether the listener has really understood what is being said.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Active listening has several benefits. First, it forces people to listen attentively to others. Second, it avoids misunderstandings, resolves conflicts and builds trust as the listener has to state his interpretation of the speech and the speaker confirms it to be the same as was intended to be said. Third, it gets people to open up, to say more. Other benefits include patient satisfaction, improved cross-cultural communication, decreased litigation and so on.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Why Active Listening

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">When people talk to each other, they don’t listen attentively. They are often distractive, half listening, half thinking about something else which is not related to the spoken topic. When engaged in a conflict they are busy thinking about their own response to what is being said by the other person so that they may win the argument.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Active or empathic listening demands putting one's self in another's place. The goal is to effectively understand and accurately interpret another's meanings. We listen for various purposes- to have information, to understand, for enjoyment, for learning. Our purpose is lost if we don’t listen carefully, attentively, actively.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">What stops us from listening perfectly

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">When listening to someone speaking, it is common to overlook aspects of the conversation or make judgments before all of the information is presented. This distorts the person’s message by affecting the perception of a particular topic. Some of the obstacles in effective listening may be understood as following:
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">The tendency of the listener to pick out aspects of a conversation that supports his own beliefs and values

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Forming of opinion before obtaining all relevant information

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Arousal of a specific emotion- anger, frustration, hatred etc. that may affect the perception of the remaining conversation

<span style="font-family: "arial";">In highly graphic and dramatic descriptions (mostly presented by the media), the listener tends to believe that all aspects of the event are bad if he can remember even one vivid part that offended him

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Hunger! Yes it is hard to listen when one is hungry (so now when you know this, it is good to plan eating before meetings where it is known that listening would be important)

<span style="font-family: "arial";">How can we become better listener

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Active, effective listening is a habit which can be developed by anyone. Just use all your senses and not only ears to hear the world. If one hears not only the words but tries to understand the feelings and emotions that the speaker is undergoing, the meaning of the spoken matter can be interpreted in the way in which it is intended to be interpreted. Here is a list of things that a “listener” should do to become a “good listener” but in no way can this list be said to be an exhaustive one. Use your imagination beyond these tips to become a good listener.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">When in a group (class, meeting, conference, seminar), don’t engage yourself in any irrelevant activity and focus your attention on the subject.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Review mentally what you already know about the subject

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Avoid distractions (looking out from window, side conversation, some noise, etc.)

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Acknowledge your emotional state, suspend emotions until later or passively participate unless you can control your emotions

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Set aside your prejudices, views, opinions, beliefs till the speaker has said all that has to be said. You are there to learn what the speaker has to say and not the other way round (your doubts may be cleared after the session is over or whenever the speaker gives chance to the audience for putting forward their questions. Just keep a note of your doubts so as to discuss later on)

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Be speaker-directed. Focus, follow and understand the speaker as if you were in his shoes. Listen not only with your ears but also with your eyes and other senses, with your mind and your heart.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Be aware. Acknowledge, non- verbally, the points of the speaker. You don’t have to agree or disagree with the speaker’s points of view- just a slight nod, a smile or an eye contact is enough to acknowledge the speaker’s efforts so as to encourage him to follow his train of thoughts.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Be involved , actively respond to questions and directions

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Summarize key points of the speech and whenever given a chance, restate and ask non-threatening questions so as to affirm your understanding of the subject.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">If some one is reading a printed material and you have a copy of the same, don’t follow the reader through the text. This will block the understanding of the subject properly. Just be a nice listener.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">If you are not able to avoid the distractions and cannot focus on listening, shut your eyes. This makes listening much sharper. But don’t try to do this while driving a car or taking skating classes, oops!!!

<span style="font-family: "arial";">How to listen well in interpersonal communications

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">In emotionally charged communications, try to listen for the feelings. Observe the behaviour and body language of the other person. This can be really helpful to avoid any conflict. In conflicts, individuals often contradict each other, trying to invalidate the other person’s position. This often results in making one defensive which can either invite harsh treatment or withdrawal. Both the options can not resolve any conflict. On the contrary, if one feels that the other person is trying to understand his feelings and the underlying causes for it, an atmosphere of cooperation can be created which may result in the resolution of the conflict
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">If you feel that you are responding emotionally to something said, say so, and ask for more information or clarification : “I think I am not able to understand you correctly and I am taking the thing personally. I thought that you just said that xxxxxxxx. Is that what you meant?” This attitude will certainly avoid any kind of misunderstanding

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Be Honest. If you are in the middle of something important, tell the same to a person trying to say something to you. Apologize and plan for another meeting so that you can give your full attention to what is being said. This will let the other people know that you appreciate their coming to you and you want to give them your full concentration. It’s much better than lending half-an-ear and not listening well.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">A person suffering from some emotional trauma or involved in a serious intra personal or interpersonal conflict has a buildup pressure of emotions in oneself. In such a state of mind one is not able to think clearly and may not be receptive to other person’s viewpoints. They need a release of the held up emotions. A ‘Good Listener’ allows the venting of emotions- anger, stress, frustration and other negative feelings- by being patient, until the individual is able to see clearly and consider other perspectives.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">If you are having trouble listening to someone, try noticing something good about the speaker or look for something interesting in what is being said. This will improve the way you listen.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">We all know some or the other person who has this reputation of being a “Good Listener”. Next time you are speaking to one of them, “Observe and Learn”.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">So, here wishing you all “Happy Listening”.
